If
you're looking for laughs then the
Ramada Inn Comedy Club is a good bet. No, you're not likely to see
Edie Murphy or Whoopi Goldberg on the marquis (though
Whoopi spottings are frequent all around Santa Fe). the Comedy Club has featured such well-known comics as
Gabe Kaplan of "Welcome Back, Kotter" fame and Chris
"Crazy Legs" Fonseca, who has appeared on MTV, HBO and
"The Tonight Show with Jay Leno", as well as plenty of
local comics

Inn Comedy Club Located in the Ramada Inn toward the southern end of
Santa Fe's commercial strip, the Comedy Club is a dinner
theater that serves American and New Mexican foods --
everything from steak and ribs to enchiladas and tacos.
There's a two-drink minimum and a $3 cover charge, though
some acts may cost up to $7. Doors open at 8 PM, and the
show starts at 9. Reservations are recommended on weekends.
Dress is relaxed, but not overly casual -- you're likely to
be turned away if you show up in cut-off shorts and a
T-shirt. The club has a nonsmoking section.
Fiesta Barn The Fiesta Barn at luxurious Rancho
Encantado is an honest-to-goodness barn that features live
country-and-western music by popular local bands on Sunday
nights from April through October. Erected about 20 years
ago, the unheated Fiesta Barn is rustic and earthy yet cozy
and comfortable with Mexican blankets adorning the beams,
haystacks around the perimeter and picnic tables for chowing
down on fresh barbecue. Beer seems to be the most popular
item from the small, full-service bar -- especially the
ever-popular, all-American Budweiser -- though some local
microbrews give the Clydesdales a run for their money. But
it's the dance that's the draw. Literally hundreds of people
show up to two-step, waltz, polka and swing the night away
to the sounds of South by Southwest or Hired Hands, both
enormously talented bands. You'll see some darned good dancers here, but don't let
that intimidate you. The wooden dance floor is big enough
for everyone, and the ambiance is friendly and fun not to
mention energetic and downright electric. In the end, it's
pure country, right down to the fashions, which include lots
of cowboy hats and boots and women in swinging skirts. Five
bucks will get you into the Fiesta Barn, which is a separate
building complete with nearby outhouses in a wooded area
close to the main lodge. The faint of heart may use the
bathrooms in the lobby, just a short stroll away along
attractive, lighted paths. While you're in the lobby, do
take a minute to absorb its curious but attractive blend of
northern New Mexican and European charm complete with huge
log vigas on the ceiling, a couple of large
fireplaces, overstuffed couches and an eclectic mix of
period furniture. You might want to show up some Friday at
the Main Lodge between 5:30 and 7:30 PM to hear talented
wranglers from the luxury resort's own stables read original
poetry and sing songs. On Sundays in the winter and Wednesdays in the spring and
summer, Rancho Encantado features dinner dancing in its
top-rated restaurant. The resort literally rolls up the
carpet to expose the dance floor so diners can cut a rug to
Big Band sounds. You'll see everything from swing and samba
to the bossa nova and cha-cha. Casual elegance is the dress
code for these nights, which tend to attract a somewhat
older audience, say 40 and up. The dinner dance goes from
5:30 to 9:30 PM and is open to the public as well as hotel
guests. There is no cover charge. Check the newspapers for
special events. Rodeo Nites Rodeo Nites is almost two nightclubs
in one. It starts out nearly every evening as a
straight-ahead country-and-western club that attracts a
loyal group of fairly genteel dancers who really know their
way around the dance floor. They two-step, swing,
line-dance, polka and waltz until about 10 or 10:30 PM. Then
the music gets louder and harder and younger -- and so does
the crowd. Between sets by almost invariably a
country-and-western band, the later crowd also dances to
ranchero, salsa, Tejano and rock spun by two deejays on the
brigs. The live music starts nightly at 8 PM. Rodeo Nites
has brought in such national luminaries as Freddie Fender,
Perfect Stranger, Neal McCoy and Sammy Kershaw as well as
local and regional favorites like South By Southwest,
Ricochet, Midnight Fire and Wild West Band. The club charges
$2.50 to get in the door on Thursdays and $3 on Fridays and
Saturdays. The rest of the week there's no cover. Wednesday
night is ladies' night, but don't get your hackles up,
fellas. The perks -- mainly discounts on special drinks --
apply to you, too. And every night is discount night at the
shot bar, where you pay less for beers and shots by getting
them yourself instead of waiting for table service. The
atmosphere at Rodeo Nites is strictly saloon with a brass
rail separating the 90-foot oval dance floor from the raised
platforms with tables and chairs. Rodeo Nites opens nightly
at 5:30 PM and closes at 2 AM (midnight on Sundays). |
